Once you’ve set up your profile, navigating the platform can initially seem intimidating; but, we’re here to help you get started.
Overview
To better understand your investments, below are some key concepts to keep in mind:
Term | Definition | Example |
Goal | A goal is your investment objective | Saving up for a car |
Portfolio | A portfolio is a curated basket of investment products by OneVest, to help you achieve your goal | OneVest’s Medium Risk Core Portfolio |
Account | An account is the legal entity in which your portfolio holdings are held | A Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) |
Sub-Account | A partition (or sleeve), created by OneVest within an account, that holds a specific portfolio | The portion of a TFSA account that holds the given Portfolio. |
Adding Multiple Goals
If you have multiple goals (say, you want to save up for a car, but also want to save for retirement), you can add more than one goal under the same account type rather than opening multiple accounts.
In the event that you have multiple goals, or multiple accounts, or both - this is where sub-accounts come in. Sub-accounts allow you to hold multiple goals (and therefore multiple model portfolios) inside a single account. Conversely, sub-accounts also allow multiple accounts to contribute to the same goal (i.e., if your retirement goal is held across Cash, TFSA, and RRSP accounts - you will have 3 sub-accounts that could each hold a model portfolio).
For example: imagine that you have configured several goals across different types of accounts and portfolios.
- The goal "Save for a car" is configured with only 1 Core TFSA portfolio, hence the message "linked to 1 sub-account".
- The "Retirement" objective is configured with an RRSP Climate Impact Portfolio and a TFSA Core Portfolio, hence the message "linked to 2 sub-accounts".
In this example, the TFSA Core portfolios are not the same for all goals, as each portfolio is a set of investment products tailored to each of your goals.
